NOTES
Traditional colours for gansey are off white for Hebridean Fishing Fleet, black for the Scottish Fishing Fleet, and navy blue for the English and Welsh Fishing Fleets.
Ganseys were traditionally knitted ‘ in the round ’ i.e. on 4 or more needles but due to size restrictions, this gansey is knitted on 2 needles. The patterns for the gansey were never written down, but passed down through families.
Although the pattern on this gansey is from Fife on the east coast of Scotland, similar patterns can be found in ganseys from other parts of Scotland, as well as Norfolk and Cornwall. This is possibly due to the fish wives following the herring fleet around the British Isles
