Gloriana Socks
Gloriana was one of the names given by the public to Elizabeth I (along with Good Queen Bess and The Fairy Queen) and I’ve chosen it as the name for this sock; a cabled, quilted, ruff-cuffed sock knit from the top down, with a heel-flap and regal gorgeousness.
Inspired by Queen Elizabeth I and a love of all things Tudor, this is the first sock in a new series inspired by costume and clothing through the ages. The leg is equivalent to the top part of the costume, complete with ‘jewelled’ bodice and slashed sleeves, which then moves on to the pointed stomacher (the bottom part of the bodice), which in turn leads on to the diamond pin-tuck kirtle, or over-skirt. And the cuff, of course, is a representation of the starched ruff collars found throughout the Elizabethan era and beyond.
