A formatted for Knit Companion version of Serendipity is also available on Create2Thrive.
errata (the following has been fixed on the latest July 2020 pdf)
- stitch count for Chart I Row 6 should be 485 (not 487)
- the stitch after ML on Chart H Row 9 should be a purl instead of a knit
- total bead count on page 1 is slightly off
Serendipity is a circular crescent-shape shawl with ends that curve back in to form a full circle (a circle with part of the circle taken out). Depending on the choice of color and yarn weight, Serendipity can be elegant and sophisticated, flirty and sassy, or ethereal and faery like. The shawls by our test knitters – Alyssa, Diana, Fiona, Karen, Ma, Nadja, Tish, Trang, and Trudy – truly showcase the versatility of this pattern. It is worked from the top down with increases at the edges as well as throughout the body and uses approximately 600 yards / 540 meters of lace- or fingering-weight yarns. Visit the information page for details.
Skill Level
Medium. Charts only. Pattern does not include row-by-row written instruction. There are patterns on some WS rows (YO, p2tog, p2tog tbl).
Yarns
Lace, heavy lace, and fingering-weight yarns are all suitable. Finished dimensions may be adjusted by using different yarn weight and needle size to achieve varying gauges.
Gauge
Gauge isn’t important but will determine the final size of the shawl. Sample swatch with fingering-weight yarn using Size US5/3.75mm is approximately 22 stitches and 26 rows to 4” / 10.0cm square.
Tools
Circular needles in size US4/3.5mm, US5/3.75mm, US6/4mm, and US7/4.5mm depending on your gauge, crochet hook, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needle, T-pins, and blocking wire(s) and mat (optional).
Beads
Size 6 or 8 rounds for lace (800m+/100g) and heavy lace weight (500-600m/100g), size 6 rounds or size 5 triangles for fingering weight (400m/100g). Bead all or just some of these charts:
Chart C – 18 beads
Chart D – 50 beads
Chart E – 64 beads
Chart F – 70 beads
Chart G – 97 beads
Chart H – 69 beads
Chart I – 146 beads
