Please note: The (k,yo,k) increase in the candle flame pattern is a double increase.

This is my favourite hat <3 I LOVE the Candle Flame shawl, and ever since I made it I’ve been thinking about other ways to use the beautiful candle flame stitch pattern - and a slouchy hat came to mind :-)

I used 2 strands of Semilla (BC Garn) and US size 6 circulars, but you can use whatever you like - there is detailed information on adapting the pattern to your chosen yarn and needle size, based on a gauge swatch.

Yardage needed depends of course on whether you use 2 strands of a lighter yarn, or 1 strand of heavier yarn - I used 2 strands and needed about 2½ skeins (50g/160m - 400 m total), which means you’d need about 200 m of a heavier yarn.

The hat is made bottom up with a double brim, and it’s really warm and toasty, great for cold winters. If you’d like a hat for spring and autumn, you could do it in a lighter yarn on larger needles :-)

The pattern is beginner friendly and lists all techniques and abbreviations, with video links to everything but knit and purl :-)

I have done my best to explain everything but please don’t hesitate to ask, should anything be unclear!

April 2013: I have just added photo tutorials for the increase and the decrease used in candle flame stitch, as these have been difficult to use for some.

Errata: The original pattern says to k row 16-20 before knitting together the live stitches with the cast on edge - it should be k row 16-30! This has been corrected in the pdf, if you download it now.
