A grin without a cat
“Well! I’ve often seen a cat without a grin,” thought Alice; “but a grin without a cat! It’s the most curious thing I ever saw in all my life!”
You can add some Wonderland charm to your kitchen with this potholder featuring Cheshire cat’s face on one side, and only his grin on the other.
Skills needed: Knit and purl. Reading charts.
Skill you can acquire: double-knitting.
Optional skills: Two colour long tail cast-on (link to video included). Grafting (link to video included).
Needle size: 4mm = US size 6. You need either two straights or a circular.
Also needed: an auxiliary needle to hold 50 stitches.
Not needed but helpful: 2 or 4 stitch markers.
Yarn: Two colours of DK cotton. About 25-30 yards each.
Gauge & size: 16 stitches and 26 rows in 4” (or 10 cm) for a finished size of about 6”x5” (18cmx15cm). However gauge is not too important, as there is no fit. You can substitute different yarn weights, just use the recommended needles for your yarn too.
This potholder is knit flat, in a 1-1 ribbing stitch, but carrying two yarns together throughout, and doing the knits or purls in just one colour according to the chart.
After finishing, an I-cord loop is done without breaking the yarns.
