“’This cowl shawl is gradually shaped outwards from the neck in order to hug the shoulders. It is light as a feather and cosy as well as pretty - perfect under a coat and proud enough to sit on its own,’ says Jane Sowerby. ‘Rather than complicate the lace patterns with increasing charts I have progressively increased the needle size to achieve a simple fit. Miss Watts did this when she designed a cape in 1837, and it is a wonderful way of shaping lace knitting.’”
