All Hands on Deck Top Down Mittens
This top-down mitten pattern is fully customizable to fit any size hand using any size yarn. Instructions are included for a squared-off mitten top, a round mitten top, a top-down thumb, or a traditional mitten thumb.
Why top down? They are easier to fit, plus there is no yarn chicken when guessing the length of the cuff. Just knit until you are ready to stop. It is a perfect use for that one skein of precious stash yarn.
Rating a knitting pattern is subjective, but I would put this as an advanced beginner level.
This pattern uses the following skills:
- knit in the round (dpns, 9” circulars, or magic loop)
- Figure-8 or Judy’s Magic Cast On
- provisional cast on
- bind off of your choice
- work knit, purl, and rib
- increase and decrease
These mittenss are highly customizable. It is helpful to try on the mittens as you go or have a hand tracing or hand measurements of the person you are knitting for. Finger length, thumb length, and total fingertip-to-wrist length are helpful measurements but not necessary.
