Andamento Socks
The term andamento describes the visual flow of individual pieces within a mosaic. I created this pattern of slipped stitches snaking across a fabric of garter rib to make the most of a variegated yarn, using a flowing element to draw the eye over the streaks and pools of color.
All motifs in this pattern are charted, and you’ll need to follow the chart for the appropriate size to complete the instep correctly. But the pattern is simple to work and easy to anticipate. The socks are worked from the top down with a heel flap construction.
Andamento was first issued in 2008 as the inaugural sock club offering from Knit/Purl, a yarn shop in Portland, Oregon. It was paired with two skeins of Koigu KPPPM and some knitters working the largest size came up a little short of yarn; make sure you have 360 yards to knit the size 10-11. This gauge is suitable for plumper sock yarns if you want a densely knitted, long-wearing sock.
