Oborine
I love rain. When I was little, I could not wait for a storm to pass so I could put my rain boots on and go outside to jump in the puddles. Dew, mist, drizzle, cloudburst, torrent - even these simple words make me happy. I adore the scent of rain in the air, before and after it falls. I love the way it washes the entire world, making the ordinary seem bright and new again, decorating everything with brilliant diamonds of raindrops. Oborine, meaning ‘rainfall’, is inspired by these tiny bits of rainbow trickling down the leaves after the rain.
This shawl is my classic top-down short row crescent shawl, designed with several different options to choose from: Large, Medium or Mini size with many beads, fewer beads, or with beads placed only along the edges. The lace pattern is simple enough even for a novice lace knitter because it includes only basic stitches and the wrong side rows are all purled. There are three options for beading given, but the project will also look great without any beads. All sizes of the shawl can be worked in lace or fingering weight yarns, and the Mini can be also worked in thicker yarns, such as sport or DK, giving you even more options for customization.
Finished Measurements:
Large shawl: 23” (center depth) x 70” (wingspan)
Medium shawl: 17.5” (center depth) x 53.5” (wingspan)
Mini shawl: 10” (center depth) x 36.5” (wingspan)
Yarn (solid or tonal colors):
Large: Any lace or fingering weight yarn, approx 875 – 950 yards
The large lace sample was completed with 875 yards of Malabrigo Lace (100% Baby Merino; 470 yards / 50 grams); color: Paris Night
Medium: Any lace, fingering or sport weight yarn, approx 350 – 400 yards
The small fingering sample was completed with 350 yards of Spirit Trail Fiberworks Frija (80% Superwash Merino Wool, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon; 377 yards / 115 grams); color: Green Darkness
Mini: Any fingering, sport, DK or worsted weight yarn, approx 190 – 210 yards
The small fingering sample was completed with 190 yards of Cascade Yarns Venezia Sport (70% Merino Wool, 30% Mulberry Silk; 307 yards / 100 grams); color: 192
Gauge:
Lace weight: 18 sts / 32 rows = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch, blocked, using US 7 / 4.50 mm needles
Fingering: 16 sts / 28 rows = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch, blocked, using US 7 / 4.50 mm needles
Sport: 15 sts / 26 rows = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch, blocked, using US 7 / 4.50 mm needles
Note: Correct gauge is not critical for this project, but your final measurements and yardage requirements may vary if your gauge is different.
Needles:
Large: Size US 6 / 4.00mm, US 7 / 4.50mm, US 8 / 5.00mm & US 9 / 5.50mm circular needle, 32” or longer
Medium & Mini: Size US 6 / 4.00mm, US 7 / 4.50mm & US 8 / 5.00mm circular needle, 32” or longer
Beads:
size ----- lots of beads ----- fewer beads ----- just edges
large ---- 1535 --------------- 1018 -------------- 169
medium - 633 ---------------- 417 --------------- 109
mini ----- 330 ---------------- 275 --------------- 79
These are exact numbers, so I would recommend having a few extra beads on hand, just in case.
Bead Size:
Bead size will depend on the weight of your yarn and which beading option you’ll choose. For example, a large lace weight shawl with lots of beads would probably work best with 8/0 3.00mm beads to avoid straining the yarn too much, but the same large size done in fingering or sport weight could easily support 6/0 4.00mm beads. For worsted weight you will need much larger beads, depending on your yarn, you may need size 5/0 4.50mm or 3/0 5.5mm beads.
