Calineczka is a Polish name for Thumbellina, and I really don’t know why the name came to my mind as the very first thought after I unpinned the shawl from blocking. The sensation was so strong that I didn’t even try to look for another name and the only thing that I did was to read the Andersen’s story to refresh my childhood memories of it.

The word ‘Calineczka’ in Polish is based on ‘cal’ which means an ‘inch’, the idea is a bit different than the English ‘thumb’.

Level - you must be familiar with lace knitting, the shawl is not very difficult to knit but there are rows which are not intuitive and may cause problems to less experienced knitters. You need to know the following: RT, LT, k2tog, ssk, yo and you also need to take into account that WS alternates knit and purl sts (included both in the charts and in written instructions)

Sizing is adaptable, you choose how big the shawl is going to be by adding more repeats of the body section.

Yarn - lace to fingering should look best on the shawl.
Consequently, needles should be adapted to the yarn used and the degree of lacy effect that you desire to achieve. I personally prefer to knit lace with larger size needles to get it really lacy.

Pictured shawl was knitted with Lenka (100% linen, 50g = 300m/328yards) on US 4 – 3.5mm needles. I used up 60g = 360m/394yards to obtain shawl that measures approx. 14 x 60” / 36 x 125cm blocked.

Calineczka powstała z potrzeby stworzenia niedużej, efektownej chusty, takiej bardziej wymagającej i skomplikowanej w dzierganiu.

W trakcie robienia cały czas zastanawiałam się, jak tę chustę nazwać, i żadna nazwa nie wydawała mi się odpowiednia. Dopiero w momencie, gdy zdejmowałam zblokowaną chustę ze szpilek sama mi ‘powiedziała’, że chce być Calineczką.

Chusta ma kształt półokrągły, rozpoczyna się ją na środku i stopniowo dodaje kolejne oczka. Rozmiar można dowolnie modyfikować powtarzając wzór główny.

Chustę należy dziergać z dość cienkiej włóczki, 500 – 800m w 100g, i bardzo ważne jest, żeby włóczka była naturalna, gdyż inaczej chusta nie zblokuje się za dobrze. Druty należy dobrać do grubości włóczki oraz do wielkości ażuru, jaki się chce uzyskać. Ja osobiście lubię chusty bardzo koronkowe i aby osiągnąć taki efekt dziergam je na grubszych drutach.

Chusta na zdjęciu została wydziergana z Lenki (100% len, 50g = 300m) na drutach 3.5mm i poszło na nią półtora motka włóczki. Chusta ma wymiary 36 x 125cm po dość energicznym zblokowaniu.
