Inspired by my trip to London in 1968, Carnaby Street has a relaxed, retro feel. It’s made interesting – both to look at and to knit – by the reverse color-work and illusion of shaping. Loose fitting, it’s comfortable to wear with ample positive ease at the bust, and it pairs equally well with jeans or a skirt.

While I chose eye-popping ‘60s colors for the sweater shown here, Carnaby Street can be knit in different palates to accommodate any age. Choose fun, bright colors for your teen or subdued colors for your mother. There is even a Carnaby Baby version for your little relic of the 60s!

Opposing colored stripes form a v-shaped panel and vents in the front of the sweater add an interesting visual element to a relatively straightforward pullover. It’s knit in separate pieces, and the intarsia method is used when changing colors for the front striping. The shoulders are joined, the sleeves set in, and the neckband is finished.

NEEDLES
Size 6 US/ 4mm straight and circular needles, or size to obtain gauge

GAUGE
22 stitches and 30 rows = 4 inches/ 10cm in Stockinette stitch. Take time to check gauge.

CONSTRUCTION
The front, back and sleeves are worked separately from the bottom-up, blocked and joined. Stitches are picked up along neckline and worked.
