The inspiration for this design came from a poem written by the greatest Italian decadent poet, Giovanni Pascoli: ‘Il gelsomino notturno’, which translates as ‘The night-blooming jasmine’. In this poem Pascoli depicts a wedding night in a bucolic setting, describing the fragrance of the jasmine flowers that bloom at night and what he calls a ‘chirping of stars’ in the sky that turns the yard blue.
Those two key elements, the flowers and the stars, were my main inspiration and are directly portrayed in the shawl: you can see the flowers in the vertical insertion that is the spine of the shawl and the beautiful allover lace pattern that represents the starry sky extending throughout the two triangular wedges.
Construction
Chirping of Stars has a simple triangle shawl construction embellished by the floral center panel. The main body of the shawl features an allover beautiful lace pattern and an elegant lace edging completes the timeless look. The shawl is worked flat from the top down, increasing four stitches on every other row. The lace edging is worked perpendicularly to the body of the shawl, joining one edging stitch together with one live shawl stitch at the end of every even-numbered edging row until all the shawl stitches have been consumed.
Elegant and light as a feather, this shawl can be worn looped around the neck as a scarf or wrapped around the shoulders if you need warmth and style.
