Named for the children’s game, inspired by the undulations and rungs of the pattern repeat- this is a challenging but fun pattern to knit and a great hat to wear.
Knit in the round with circular and double pointed needles.

200 - 230 yards sport weight yarn, sample in Quince & Co Chickadee,
shown in River and in Split Pea.
Gauges : 6.5 stitches =1” in stockinette stitch + 2” repeat= 20 inch hat
6 stitches =1” in stockinette stitch + 2.175” repeat= 21.5 inch hat
5.75 stitches =1” in stockinette stitch + 2.25” repeat= 23 inch hat
The hat is really quite Soft + Stretchy The River is closer to the smaller gauge. It stretches to 23”, shaping back to 20”. Without hat head.
Circular and DPN’s in size to achieve gauge, samples were knit with US5 (3.75mm) and US4 (3.5mm) by average tension knitters.
