Inspired by Sedona’s red rock spires. Designed to be a chalk bag for rock climbing, with a rigid opening and a fleece lining that closes with a hidden drawstring.

(Also makes a great, secure little bag for carrying anything precious … Sedona crystals, anyone?)

The pattern is moderately challenging, but you’re walked through it in great detail with both written and charted instructions as well as a photo tutorial for the rim and lining construction. The sewing required is pretty basic hand-sewing.

And a quick note on the yarn choice: for durability, I chose a hemp-blend yarn knitted at a tighter-than-normal gauge. A heavy sock yarn would probably make a fine substitute if you wanted to knit it in wool or if you’re planning on climbing indoors and durability isn’t such an issue.

Happy climbing!
