I wanted to design a ski-mask that did not bunch up round the neck, but was instead fitted around the jaw, more like a helmet.

In order to do that, and make it possible to easily take on and off, I used a combination of techniques, but most importantly adding a back flap, which uses (crocheted) buttons to close.

I am pretty happy with the way it turned out, and the base design is perfect to add embellishments, such as tentacles for a “Cthulu” inspired mask, or something similar.

The mask itself fits an avergae adult head. Given the style of crochet it has some stretch to it, but the stop-gap is the jaw. If you are making this for someone with a slightly bigger head, you may want to decrease the number of decreases in the final rows that tighten up the jaw. Similarly, if you’re making for a teenager you can increase the decreases, and that will help tighten it up.

I used a 4.5mm hook and baby/fingering yarn. Gauge was approx. 4” square = 17sc x 16 rows. It took around 60 grams of yarn. I used two different colored yarns, one being an accent color for the eyes, but that is not needed. If you do want to do that only a very small amount of the accent color is needed.

Warning: The pattern is not difficult, but it does have some uncommon things going on. I wrote somewhat exhaustive notes on the first page of the pattern which should help clarify things for folk! Once you see the pattern and process it works up quite easily.

I hope you like it! Feel free to message me if you have any questions.
