Corinthian (A Lesson in Cables)
Corinthian is fun chunky cabled hat that you can knit up in a weekend, or maybe even an evening!
This was designed and knit with handspun yarn, somewhere between an Aran and a bulky yarn, and any bulky that you can meet gauge with should work out great. Alternately, two strands of worsted held together should also work beautifully.
The name of the hat comes from both the color of the yarn, which reminds me of dark granite, and the columns of cables, which remind me of rows of Corinthian pillars. This hat is a cable dream, with single and double cables working their way up to a beautiful symmetrical decrease through the crown. If you’ve never had the opportunity (or time) to learn how to cable without a cable needle, this is the pattern for you! I’ve included fairly detailed directions for how to cable without a cable needle, so you get a pattern and a tutorial all in one!
PLEASE NOTE: In the finished measurements portion of this pattern, it says that the hat is 18 inches in diameter. That would be one gigantic head! “Diameter” should read “circumference”. The hat is 9 inches edge to edge when laid flat. Sorry about that!

Many people have found that this pattern results in a hat that is too shallow from brim to crown. I plan on revising this pattern in the future, but for now, I suggest that you add one or two repeats of the cables before moving on to the decrease section, or add length to your ribbed brim for a regular adult-sized hat.
Apparently I knit really “tall”!
