Distitch Edge Coaster
The Distitch Edge coaster is worked in simple Garter stitch. However it has a very exciting feature - a new type of selvedge. Slip knit Distitch selvedge (open) is a new type of selvedge. This technique is fully explained in the attached tutorial with written instructions, diagrams and video.
The tutorial is taken from Distitch, a book about this innovative principle of knitting. Distitch provides a very neat, clear and decorative edge. Two types of selvedges, closed and open are shown in this video. More about Distitch knitting can be found on this website https://assiabrill.com/
The tangerine coaster features the open chain selvedge. The second white coaster is worked using the same pattern, but with the closed chain selvedge, tutorial is included together with the free pattern for Distitch Edge Scarf.
Both selvedges can be used for scarf edges and many other edges worked in conventional garter stitch. Different ways of slipping the first stitch at the beginning of the row give open or closed chains of stitches on the edge, see the picture (7) with Two Rings cowl. The closed chain (light blue) consists of twisted stitches and is narrower and tighter. The open one is wider and much looser (dark blue). Try both to decide which is best for your project.
Any yarn can be used, but cotton or cotton mix yarns are the best choice. This project is very quick (just half an hour) and is great for a last minute gift. It is also ideal for using up leftovers!
This basic pattern is suitable for beginners.
