This pattern took a meandering route to fruition, filled with alternate endings and adaptations. It began life as a cardigan that Lisa was designing for Vogue Knitting--“If Hugh Hefner Were a Sexy Lady: Her Smoking Jacket”--but the stitch count didn’t work, so she put it aside. Then when Chicago Knits Magazine did an “Art Deco” issue, Lisa dug up the partially knitted sweater, bound it off and called it the “Heff Muff” after the sweater. However, she still wasn’t quite satisfied with it. Meanwhile, she met her design partner Lucia (a huge GG fan) and Gilmore Girls costume designer Brenda Maben, who gave us the perfect opportunity to finesse and perfect this pattern when she asked us to make some signature knit pieces for the denizens of Stars Hollow upon their return to the small screen. While we pictured Lorelai “Rory” Gilmore (Jr.)--her mother’s eponymously titled creation--wearing this, it somehow makes sense that a garment originally inspired by the fantasy of a genderbent Hugh Hefner would ultimately end up around Paris Geller’s neck. Now, yours too!
