Overhauled and revised from the 2005 original, this write up includes three different ways to do the square. In two pieces or all as one. Choose which one you like based on design needs or skill level.
Gauge isn’t important, but done as written, the square will end up:
7” with worsted weight and size 5.5mm hook
5” with baby sport and 4mm hook
3” with size 10 thread and 1.65mm hook

FYI - Magic Loop foundations:
There are lots of tutorials online about how to do a crochet magic loop foundation. The easiest explanation I’ve seen says this, wrap the yarn around your finger twice. Work Round 1 stitches into this loop. Pull the yarn tail to tighten the loop.
