Flying Scotsman
You can buy this pattern individually or as part of the Scotch Knits collection (4 patterns for 6 euros), but you’ll have to decide at time of purchase.
Flying Scotsman - Flying needles
(a surprisingly quick knit even with fairisle and cables !)
The cables are actually mock cables - no cable needle and no twisting of the stitches - really quick and relaxing.
The fairisle is worked over 17 rows, but only 9 rows involve two colours - so that limits the fiddly bit - but still provides the impact of fairisle.
When the fairisle section is knitted with a self-striping yarn, the colourwork looks more complicated without any extra knitting effort.
Some written instructions are provided, but the colourwork and mock cables are only available in chart form.
For the colourwork two charts are provided (light MC and dark MC) so that you can use the one that best matches your yarns. They are grey on white so you can colour them in and try out your colour ideas.
The shawl is a traditional shape and sits nicely on the shoulders or can be pinned in front.

You may see some 2011 projects linked to this pattern with quite a different shape - they were made with an earlier test version of the pattern, but I modified the shape because that shape relied to much on gauge and blocking.
