The Fountains and Cables scarf was made as a wedding gift for a friend, and is my answer to several challenging constraints I faced in the design. The constraints were:

-Very warm, but no wool content. My friend is moving to a city where winters are even colder than they are here, and she is allergic to wool.
-Long and cozy, but not need more than 1 skein of yarn.
-Side, top, and bottom edges that don’t curl. I didn’t want to create a “high-maintenance” scarf that would require frequent heavy blocking.

I used Shokay Orient, which contains 75% yak down, for warmth and hypo-allergenicity. The Fountain Lace pattern opens up nicely to cover a lot of area, without being too holey for winter. Rows of eyelets at the top and bottom edges, along with mirrored mock cables at the right and left sides, ensure that the scarf remains curl-free without heavy blocking.

The scarf may be made in any weight of yarn, at any gauge. Directions are provided for two sizes (widths), corresponding to one or two repeats of the central Fountain Lace stitch pattern. It is recommended that the larger stitch count be used for finer yarns in order to obtain a reasonable width, while thicker yarns will do well at the smaller stitch count. However, the choice of yarn weight, gauge, and stitch count is up to you. A heavy animal-fiber yarn will make a warm scarf for winter, while a lighter weight yarn (like cotton or silk) will yield a delicate accessory for summer.

Scarf pattern is presented in both written and charted formats.

Finished Measurements:
Size S: 5” / 13 , Size M: 8 ½” / 21.5 cm width x 74” / 188 cm length in sport weight yarn. Green scarf shown in size S, purple in size M.

Materials:
Yarn: Fingering to worsted weight. Sport weight requires approximately 250 yards/ 230 meters (425 yards/ 400 meters).
Green scarf shown in Shokay Orient (245 yards/ 224 meters per 3.5 oz/ 100 g; 75% yak, 25% bamboo) in color Celery.
Purple scarf shown in Bernat Baby Solids.

Needles and gauges: US #6/ 4 mm: 19 sts x 26 rows= 4 x 4” / 10.2 x 10.2 cm in sport weight yarn in Fountain Lace pattern (similar in stockinette). Adjust needle size to obtain desired gauge. Gauge is not important, but will affect finished width of scarf.
