An original crochet amigurumi monkey pattern by June Gilbank. Crochet adult and baby monkeys with poseable wired legs and tail. Bonus: the pattern also includes full instructions to make a wire-free (child-safe) monkey with dangling legs.

Species info: The dark adult and baby monkeys with tails are inspired by tamarin monkeys, and the long-legged tailless monkey is inspired by the gibbon family (technically an ape, not a monkey - hence no tail!)

Yarn: worsted weight yarn for face and feet and a fuzzy yarn (yarn advice is given in pattern; Patons Carmen in Chocolate dark brown and Patons Allure in Sable light brown used for example monkeys)

Hook (adult monkeys): US H / 5mm and US G / 4mm
Hook (baby monkeys): US H / 5mm and US E / 3.5mm

Size: The size will vary depending on the yarns used and the type of monkey you make. The example monkeys are 9″ long (not including tail or dangling legs) and the baby monkey is 6″ long (not including tail).

Adult monkeys: 9mm

A note about ‘Fuzzy’ patterns: When I created my ‘Fuzzy’ patterns, in 2007 and 2008, there were a lot of different eyelash and other fuzzy novelty-type yarns available in most yarn and craft stores. Sadly, most of them have now been discontinued and it can be difficult to find a suitable yarn. You could substitute a different fuzzy yarn, or try looking on eBay.com or ravelry.com for someone who may have eyelash yarn for sale. If you can’t find any suitable fuzzy yarns, don’t despair: all my ‘Fuzzy’ patterns include an additional PDF file showing how to work these patterns with a regular worsted weight yarn of your choice, and then either leave them smooth, or brush them to get a different, but still cute, fluffy effect!
