Hyperion (“The High-One”) was one of the twelve Titan children of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky or Heaven) who, led by Cronus, overthrew Uranus and were themselves later overthrown by the Olympians. With his sister, the Titaness Theia, Hyperion fathered Helios (Sun), Selene (Moon) and Eos (Dawn).

Hyperion’s son Helios was referred to in early mythological writings as Helios Hyperion. He was always distinguished from Helios; the former was ascribed the characteristics of the “God of Watchfulness, Wisdom and Light”, while the latter became the physical incarnation of the Sun.

Materials:

Yarn: Wollmeise Sockenwolle 80/20 Twin Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi) or any fingering weight yarn

510 yards (466 meters) 150 grams (5.29 ounces)

How much? 0.3 skeins = 153.0 yards (139.9 meters), 45 grams

Colorway Stella polaris (Main Picture Hat at 133 sts takes less than 45 grams, 22” stretched)

Needles: US 4, 3.50 mm double pointed needles or a circular needle with cable of 30” or more.

Gauge: 2 “ = 12 Sts and 17 Rows in Stockinette Stitch (adjust needle size to get gauge if needed)

This hat has stitch numbers for sizes S(mall), M(edium), L(arge), XL(arge) for adults. The rib band shall measure about 18( 20, 22, 24) inches , taking into consideration that there is a negative ease of about 2 to 4 inches, if you get gauge. For a Hat size S (M, L, XL) cast on 100 (120, 132, 144). When you have finished the rib of your choice, knit one round increasing by 14 (13, 20, 27) sts to set up for the appropriate hat size. Make sure you distribute your increases as evenly as possible. You may increase Sts by using a backward loop, or you preferred method of increasing sts.

Pattern Notes:

You can increase the stitches by a count of 19 (for each additional chart repeat) if you wish to widen the hat for a tam or a more slouchy hat. You will do this by making your increases while knitting a plain knit Rnd before you start the chart or by incorporating the increases in the 1st Rnd of the Chart. Spread the increases evenly on your circular needle or double pointed needles. I personally find the long tail cast on very stretchy, but feel at ease using your preferred way of casting on stitches.

Once you have set up the size of your head band, I recommend a (K1 x P1) ribbing of about 1 to 2 inches in length. Have a longer ribbing if you desire, remember that ribbing can always be folded, I would rather have a longer ribbing that one that is too short.
