An alternative way to start the coaster (if you aren’t comfortable with the magic loop), is to ch3, and then do 6 sc in the first chain.

Using different colors for each coaster allows people to recognize which glass is theirs. Thus the “ID” part of the coaster.

Using different combinations of colors, between the base and chains, gives you a greater variety of coasters for people to pick from.
