Ionic Mittens
There is something special about working with a rare breed yarn like Leicester Longwool. It can be tricky to use such a rustic yarn, but my swatching led me to the resulting cables that pop in a lovely way. If you are not one to wear rustic wool on your wrists, there are many other DK weight yarns that would work well in this pattern. The blue version in Tor DK is super soft and warm without being heavy. The cables and twisted stitches keep the project interesting, but the pattern is not complex, especially for knitters with cable experience.
Required Skills:
The mitten is worked in the round from the wrist up. THe stitch pattern uses twisted stitches, as well as cable crossings. The mitten top is closed using the Kitchener Stitch, a technique not explained in the pattern. All of the directions are written. Both the main cable pattern and the mitten tops are charted. The pattern does not recommend a particular method for knitting small circumferences in the round.
Gauge, after blocking:
20 sts & 28 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette
36 sts & 30 rows = 4” (10 cm) in cable pattern
Finished Measurements:
Size - Hand Circumference - Length
S - 7” (18 cm) - 8 3/4” (22 cm)
M - 8.5” (21.5 cm) - 9.5” (24 cm)
L - 9.5” (24 cm) - 11” (28 cm)
XL - 11” (28 cm) - 11.75” (30 cm)
Yarn:
Natural Mittens - Ross Farm Fibers, 100% Leicester Longwool in DK weight, 250 yards/skein
Medium sample used approximately 160 yds
Blue Mittens - Yarn Hollow Tor DK, 100% Superwash Merino,
260 yds/4 oz
Medium sample used approximately 120 yds
Additional Supplies:
2 Cable Needles, 2 Stitch Markers,
Stitch Holder or Scrap Yarn
Good Yarn Substitutions:
Any DK weight yarn. A rounder yarn (3-ply) will help the cable stitches pop more, but a flatter yarn like the Ross Farm or a 2-ply handspun still works well.
