I was looking to create a unisex scarf pattern that was easy to make yet had a bit of texture in the design. It was important that the scarf looked good on both sides and the basketweave pattern was ideal for this.
I’ve used just knit and purl stitches, so it’s interesting for a beginner to make.
Although the scarf is knitted in 100% Cashmere from Royd Moor Yarns, you could substitute this yarn for other 4 ply yarns and even sock yarns. It all depends how soft you would like the scarf around your neck.
There are two different needle sizes that you can use. I liked the slightly tighter feel of the 3.25mm needles with the cashmere, but you could go up or down a few sizes depending on the yarn that you are using. If I was knitting with sock yarn, I would probably work with a size larger needle so that there was more of a drape to the scarf.
If you decide to use the laceweight yarn, use it double stranded.
You can make the scarf as long or as short as you would like. Knit to the end of your ball of yarn, or add another ball and make it extra long and snuggly.
