This pattern was published in 1862

The pattern calls for 3-ply yarn. I don’t know if this is the same as what we call 3-ply today.

The shawl is striped and uses three colors: three skeins of the main color, Two of the next color and one of the third color.

The pattern suggest a hook size no. 8 on the Bell scale.One conversion chart lists this as 4mm
