Lila Shawl
I have been coverting all the beautiful shawls around for a while. Following a wonderful day out at the seaside that ended in a yarn shop (!) and the aquisition of new lace yarn I felt inspired to try and design one myself.
This is a fairly simple but effective lace pattern with the crescent shaping created by short rows, and makes a good introduction to shawl knitting.
The crescent shape of this delicate little shawl makes it very apatable. It can be wrapped around the neck a few times and look more like wrapped scarf, gently draped and held with a shawl pin, stick or broach or even worn over the shoulders….like a shawl!
I knitted this in a 4ply/fingering - however it does behave much more like lace weight. If using a traditional 4 ply it will be bigger than dimensions given and use more yarn (450 yards in 4ply should be sufficient though).
Notes: Although gauge isn’t hugely important in this pattern it’s still worth swatching to ensure that you get a fabric that you like and that drapes nicely. As always gauge will affect yardage.
- I hope you enjoy both making and wearing the shawl. It is offered on a free basis and if you spot any problems please let be know so that I can correct them.
Errata: : for downloads prior to 11/04/12
There was a small mistake in the chart for pattern B. In the main pattern repeat for rows 11 & 13 the corrections are as follows
R 11: after sk2p - there are now two shaded ‘no stitches’
R 13: after sk2p - there are an additional two shaded ‘no stitches’.
In the written instructions for pattern B a correction has been made to R11. It now reads
* rpt to last 13 stitches, K11, K2tog.
The pdf for Lila now includes these updates.
