Marija Jurić Zagorka was the first female journalist and among the most read writers in Croatia. Most of her stories take place in the old part of my hometown, Zagreb. Zagorka’s female heroins are strong and fragile at the same time, and many Croatian girls, including me, have spent countless nights reading “just one more page”.

Daughter of the Lotrščak is one of my favorites. The story is centered on the old Zagreb princess Manduša, famed for her gentile kindness, religious upbringing and beauty. When a man named the “Antichrist” arrives, the clergy condemns him to be executed. Manduša becomes a social outcast after being accused by the bishop and his mistress of being a child left on her father’s doorstep. She decides to sacrifice herself by saving the Antichrist from execution by offering her hand in marriage. They are both banished from the city, at which point the story starts to unfold through the open battle of nobles with The Margrave Georg von Brandenburg and the Zagreb clerics. The story deals with numerous issues such as the nature of marriage bringing up controversial questions such as marriage of Catholic priests.

This easy top down pattern contains both charted and written instructions. Twisted rib will make them super elastic, and a little bit of lace will add some interest to the knitting. They would also look great in semi-solid or even self-striping yarn.

Enjoy the pattern and as always, let me know if there are some errors or if you need help resizing it!

Feel free to sell objects made from this pattern, just don’t sell the pattern itself:)
