Special Stitch – Herringbone Double Crochet – (Hb dc) – yo, insert hook into indicated stitch, yo draw loop up and through, first loop on hook, (2 loops on hook), yo and draw through 1 loop on hook, yo and draw through both loops on hook. (Hb dc completed)

This will make a hat that fits behind the ears if you want longer feel free to add rows to both the beginning of the hat and also the body of the hat i would add atleast 3-4 extra rows for a over the ear hat.
