This sweater was inspired by a piece by artist Christian Marclay that graced the cover of the catalog for an exhibition of his work at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Mr. Marclay often uses collage and borrows bits of other art, transforms them and incorporates them in his work. I thought that using this motif and bits of leftover yarns in a limited color range echoed his method.

The motif is embroidered, resulting in pleasingly round dots. To enable the embroidery, the front and back are knit separately, but the provisional cast-on allows for tailoring the length later. The sleeve stitches are picked up at the shoulder and knit top-down, in the round.

Include the cozy turtleneck or finish the neck with 1-2 inches of ribbing.

Sizes XS (S, M, L, 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X) correspond to garment chest measurements 36.75 (41.75, 44.25, 49.25, 51.75, 56.75, 62, 64.5, 69.5) inches/ 93 (106, 112.5, 125, 131.5, 144.5, 157, 163.5, 176.5) cm. I recommend about 10 inches/ 25.5 cm of positive ease.

Recommended yarn
Ewetopia Ridge Sport and Ewetopia Silk and Mohair held together.

  • Ridge Sport - 100% wool, 300 yds/ 274 m per 3.5 oz/ 100 g; sample in 20% Gray; 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) skeins
  • Silk and Mohair - 72% Superfine Kid Mohair/ 28% Silk, 455 yds/ 416 m per 1.7 oz/ 50 g; sample in Silver; 3 (3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4) skeins

OR

Holst Supersoft 50% Merino, 50% Shetland wool; 314 yds/287 m per 50 g; sample color: Oxford (charcoal-like); 7 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11, 11, 12) cakes. Note: that Holst Supersoft is available less expensively on cones of 500 g, or approximately 3,140 yd/2,870 m.
Sample worked with two strands held together.

OR

Any worsted weight yarns that yield the design gauge can be used without holding two yarns together. Approximately
1030 (1115, 1175, 1280, 1335, 1435, 1535, 1620, 1670) yds/
945 (1020, 1075, 1170, 1220, 1315, 1405, 1485, 1530) m

Motif: approximately 75 yd/69 m in total, split among several colors, or to taste. Should be same yarn weight and type as MC (all non-superwash or all superwash). No need for a companion strand if the gauge matches.

Needle size
Always use a needle size that gives you the design gauge.

  • 1 US #7/4.5 mm circular needle, 40-inch/100-cm for body and for sleeves (magic loop)
  • 1 US #6/4 mm circular needle, 40-inch/100-cm for ribbing
  • 1 US #4/3.5 mm circular needle, 40-inch/100 cm for turtleneck
  • US #7/4.5 mm double pointed needles or short circulars for sleeves (optional)
  • US #6/4 mm double pointed needles or short circulars for ribbings (optional)
  • 1 US #1 or 2/2.5 mm crochet hook (for picking up sts and provisional cast-on); exact size not important

Notions

  • scrap yarn for provisional cast-on, to hold shoulder sts, to mark motif placement, and to baste side seams. ~2 yds of skinny cotton or linen yarn is useful for motif placement

  • locking stitch markers

  • darning needle for embroidery and seaming

  • ball-head sewing pins
