6 oz. of 3 ply wool (main colour)
1 oz. lighter wool
1 oz. darker colour.

(May be different to modern wool, ensure tension is correct.)

Materials required: Six ounces three-ply fingering, in red, one in black, one in speckled black and white, 9 black buttons, 1 pair of No. 11, and 1 pair No. 9 knitting needles (use 10 if a loose worker).

Tension: 6½ sts to an inch.
