Rufus Textured Cardigan
Adapted from a vintage 1950s Paragon book published in New Zealand.
A note about the buttonholes:
The buttonhole spacing is based on your getting row gauge of 10 rows to the inch. If you don’t get the same row gauge, your buttons may end up spaced weirdly or you may need one less button altogether. The buttons are supposed to be spaced about 1.75” apart. You want the last buttonhole to end right at the point where you begin the raglan shaping. To make sure that you end up with the correct number of buttons, count the number of rows per inch you are getting and adjust the number of rows between each buttonhole, so your buttons end up spaced approximately 1.75” apart.
The pattern is written so you work the buttonholes every 18 rows, at 10 rows/inch. If you are getting a row gauge of 8 rows to the inch, you would want to adjust it so that you work the buttonhole every 14 rows instead of every 18; if you are getting a row gauge of 9 rows to the inch, you’d work the buttonhole every 16 rows; and so on.
