The Story:
Even though I don’t live in a cold place now, I grew up braving the winters of western Canada. I well remember a white Christmas and the many layers of clothes needed to stay warm.

I also have vivid memories of going to church every Christmas Eve, sitting anxiously through mass, just waiting for the chance to go back to the home of our family friend for rum balls, chocolate dipped cookies and Christmas carols - one of which was always Little Drummer Boy.

Materials:

  • Blue Sky Alpaca Techno (bulky weight; 68% baby alpaca, 10% extra fine merino, 22% silk; 120 yds/50g): 2 hanks ‘1970 Fame’
  • US 10.5 (6.5mm) needles
  • Cable needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Stitch holder or length of smooth waste yarn
  • Pom Pom maker: 1⅜ inches (35mm) size
  • Tapestry needle

Notes:

  • This scarf is knit flat, width-wise, beginning with a standard cast-on. An over-sized vertical button hole will be worked into the scarf to achieve the Pass Through for the scarf end.
  • Adjust needle size as necessary to match gauge.
  • When knitting to length before binding off, if row gauge differs from that provided in the pattern, it’s best to knit slightly longer than noted to complete the pattern on the correct row.
  • If you adjust the scarf length, reserve 20g (50 yds) of yarn for the pom poms.
  • Instructions for the Garter Rib gauge pattern provided.
