Sand Dollar
From the Virtual Yarns website: “This is Jade’s design, completed during her knitting apprenticeship. Her brief was to design a garment that could be different in appearance from a gansey, but which must have all the standard gansey features, including underarm gussets. She still has a sand dollar that she picked up from a beach as a child, and she designed patterns loosely based upon it. The result is very feminine, but all the fisher gansey features are there.”
Summary: Sand Dollar is a round-neck, A-line, woman’s pullover featuring unique gansey stitch patterning. The A-line style is accentuated by a band of pattern across the bustline, separating the ‘lower’ pattern area from the ‘bodice’ pattern area. Each pattern section is different but all flow together in expression. The bottom hemline is scaloped due to the stitch patterning employed. The body is knit in one piece on a circular needle to the yoke area, then the front and back are worked separately. The sleeves are picked-up from the body and worked down to the cuff.
Skills needed : cable knitting, pick-up stitches, increase and decrease in pattern, gusset handling and 3-needle shoulder joining. The pattern includes a section on the shaping techniques used.
