Sonobe is an impactful, open-front cardigan whose ingenious construction marries knitting and modular origami. A meandering band of brioche ribbing forms the peplum base of the garment, guiding the eyes along paths both angular and curvilinear. The dramatic A-line flare of the hem is mirrored by jutting brioche lapels, while the rest of the body is left in trim stockinette for a piece that is altogether greater than the sum of its parts.

Construction

Peplum is worked flat in Brioche Stitch in two halves, each beginning at center front and worked sideways to the center back. The two halves are joined using the Modified Exposed Joinery Bind Off. The bodice is picked up directly from the peplum and worked flat to the shoulders in stockinette stitch. Sleeves are worked circularly to the underarm in stockinette with a ribbed cuff, then flat for the cap shaping and sewn into the armholes. Collar is worked in two halves and joined at center back neck using the Modified Exposed Joinery Bind Off, then sewn to the body.

Yarn

Brooklyn Tweed Arbor — 100% American Targhee Wool (145 yards/132 meters per 50 grams)

  • 10 (11, 12, 14, 15, 16) skeins
  • Photographed in Arbor color Driftwood

—OR—

Brooklyn Tweed Re•Ply Rambouillet — 100% American Rambouillet Wool (130 yards/119 meters per 45 grams)

  • 11 (13, 14, 15, 16^, 18) skeins
  • Photographed in Re•Ply Rambouillet color Root

The marked skein counts “^” are near or exact to the listed yardage; consider adding an extra skein.

Yardage

  • 1410 (1575, 1705, 1920, 2070, 2235) total yards of DK weight wool yarn

Gauge

  • 22 stitches and 32 rows or rounds = 4″ in stockinette stitch with Size A needle(s), after blocking
  • 20 stitches and 56 rows = 4″ in Brioche Stitch with Size B needle(s), after blocking

Note that for Brioche Stitch, each elongated stitch in a column of knit stitches represents two rows; when you count these it will appear that 28 rows = 4”.

Needles

Size A (for Main Fabric)

  • One 32″ circular needle and one set of double-pointed needles* (DPNs) in size needed to obtain gauge listed
  • Suggested Size: 4 mm (US 6)

Size B (for Brioche Stitch)

  • One pair of straight needles or a 32″ circular needle** in size needed to obtain gauge listed
  • Suggested Size: 3¾ mm (US 5)

Size C (for Ribbing)

  • One set of DPNs*, three sizes smaller than Size A
  • Suggested Size: 3¼ mm (US 3)

Size D (optional; for 1×1 Tubular Cast On only)

  • One pair of straight needles or a 32″ circular needle**, one size smaller than Size B

Size E (optional; for 2×2 Tubular Cast On only)

  • One pair of DPNs*, one size smaller than Size C
  • Suggested Size: 2¾ mm (US 2)

*32″ circular needle can be used instead of DPNs if using the Magic Loop method for working small circumferences in the round.

**Knitter’s preferred style of needle may be used.

Note: If you have adjusted the needle size to obtain the correct gauge, it may or may not be necessary to make a matching adjustment to the needle size used for Tubular Cast On due to variance in individual work. You may wish to test your chosen cast-on method on your swatch.
