This method - called the steek sandwich - creates a neat facing which is particularly useful for finishing off edges, such as those at the front opening of a cardigan or around a shawl or blanket. The sandwich also acts as reinforcement for button bands etc.

The pattern for a headband teaches several different techniques - crocheted reinforcing, cutting, steek-sandwich-creating, applied i-cord and buttonholes - techniques with multiple applications which together lend a really professional-looking finish to any knitted garment or accessory.

This pattern was used to teach a Steek Sandwich workshop in This is Knit, Dublin in April 2012.
