Surplice Baby Jacket
Pattern description from Vogue Knitting, Spring/Summer 2007: “Many knitters know about Elizabeth Zimmermann through her now classic Baby Surprise Jacket. Here is another, nearly equally surprising garter-stitch baby design, which I found in one of Elizabeth’s journals. I have never seen the prototype.” - Meg Swansen.
Materials: “4 balls of “Shetland Jumper-Weight” wool and a 24” circular needle of a size to give you wanted gauge (approximately #3-#5).“
Size: “About 8.5” (9”) across when flaps are folded corner to corner. 8” to 9” tall from neck back to lower edge (babies are rather square little units). 3.5” (4)” sleeve length, without added cuffs.“
Gauge: 5.5 stitches to one inch (vary this to increase or decrease dimensions).“
Note: “2 rows = 1 R(idge). M(ake) 1 is an increase. Use any method you like; just be consistent.”
This pattern may be found on page 28 & 30 in Vogue Knitting, Spring/Summer 2007.
