Egg-Pron, the egg gathering apron.

This is a basic pattern I designed for a rectangular apron with a dozen attached egg sized pockets on it…it is designed to hold just-gathered chicken eggs… it has a ruffled edge on it…. Make it smaller, wider, narrower, add egg pockets, don’t add the ruffle…whatever works for your vision or with your stash. This is a stash busting project par excellence.

I tried to keep the instructions as plain as possible and have updated the pattern with standard crochet terms and abbreviations. (Thank you to those who alerted me and pointed me in the right directions there).

I think it’s fairly straight forward anyway--it’s really just a basic apron with pockets on the outside for holding eggs.

It is a pretty quick project, and a fun one (because of all the colors!), as well as a useful one--I have a lot of hens, they lay a lot of eggs…it’s hard to hold them all, and I hate putting them into a basket, as I’ve had more than one egg break on me there. These pockets hold a dozen eggs, and keep both my hands free too.

My hens lay all sorts of sized eggs and I’ve never had a problem with any egg falling out of a pocket, (even when I let the offspring collect them), but you can make the pockets as deep or as not deep as you want to accommodate your own particular flock.

I tend to use a G or H hook, with Red Heart yarns for durability and washability around the farm…but use what ever you like, really, so long as it makes a sturdy apron with sturdy pockets…the whole point is hand free transport of eggs from coop to carton, in one piece!
