KITS ARE FOR SALE EITHER THROUGH MY ETSY SHOP OR THROUGH RAVELRY … EACH KIT CONTAINS A SKEIN OF YARN, 2 0Z. OF BEAUTIFULLY HAND-DYED ROVING AND MY PATTERN … CONVO ME IF YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC COLOR REQUEST*

This pattern will be available in Dutch by end of November

Thrummed mittens are mittens made with tufts of roving (or fleece) knitted into them. They originated in Newfoundland and are fun to make and very warm to wear and make fantastic gifts. They are made using double point needles or you can use the Magic Loop method or 2 circulars.

With the purchase of the mitten pattern, you will receive a free thrummed hat pattern written in 3 different sizes.

The yarn I have used in the mittens shown are Manos del Uruguay Wool Classica, Steadfast Fibers Wonderful Wool and Knitpicks Bulky. Also used (but not shown), Malabrigo, Auracania Chunky, Classic Elite Montera and Cascade 128.

Note that when using Manos or any of the yarns that have about 130 yards and you are making the larger size, you will need to use a contrast yarn for the first little bit of the mittens.

The roving I use is either merino or Blue-faced Leicester (BFL) from a few different sources … some of the fabulous hand-painted ones were bought from Greenwood Fiberworks on Etsy, some from Hello Yarn and some are from Mielke’s Fiber Arts.

The pattern is written for 2 sizes … adult small and adult medium. Additional sizes can be obtained by using either a US 8 or US 9 needle or adding or subtracting 4 stitches.

I have also played a little with different “cuff” types. Either casting on in a contrast color and purling one row or doing a Latvian Braid as shown in the aqua mitten. These are NOT included in the pattern instructions but are easily modified. There are several videos that show how to knit the braid.

Please do not sell items made from my patterns. Thank you.
