I designed the ‘Travelmate’ as a companion for extended train rides. I wanted something that wouldn’t be as boring as garter stitch all over, yet simple; something that wouldn’t require too much attention and could be put aside at any time. The choice fell on a simple slip stitch pattern which achieves an optical weave effect, embedded in a garter stitch frame.

The shawl is worked from the bottom up and forms a symmetrical triangle. You can make it as large as you want (or as your yarn supply allows).

For the weave-like pattern to be effective, the yarn should not be too thin. The lower limit is around 320 to 340 meters per 100 grams (sport weight). In addition, it’s a plus if the yarn that forms the weave pattern is slightly thicker than the yarn for the background, because this lets the pattern stand out a little more. If you prefer optical variety, you should consider a color gradient for at least one of the yarns. If you feel brave, you can also use two different gradient yarns, as long as the contrast between the colors is strong enough.

Den ‘Travelmate’ entwarf ich als Reisebegleiter für ausgedehnte Bahnfahrten. Ich wollte etwas, das nicht ganz so langweilig daherkommt, wie kraus rechts Gestricktes, aber dennoch einfach ist, nicht zu viel Aufmerksamkeit erfordert und jederzeit beiseite gelegt werden kann. Die Wahl fiel auf ein simples Hebemaschenmuster, das einen optischen Web-Effekt erzielt, eingebettet in einen Rahmen aus kraus rechten Reihen.

Das Tuch wird von unten nach oben gearbeitet und bildet ein symme­trisches Dreieck. Die Größe ist frei wählbar.

Damit das Webmuster zur Geltung kommt, sollte das Garn nicht zu dünn sein. Die untere Grenze liegt bei etwa 320 bis 340 Meter pro 100 Gramm (engl: sport). Zudem ist es von Vorteil, wenn das Garn, welches das Webmuster bildet, etwas dicker ist als das Garn für den Hintergrund, weil dadurch das Muster etwas plastischer wirkt. Wer optische Abwechslung bevorzugt, sollte wenigstens bei einem der Garne einen Farbverlauf in Erwägung ziehen. Ganz Mutige können auch zwei Garne mit Farbverlauf einsetzen, solange der Kontrast zwischen den Farben groß genug ist.
