Mobius knitting is super-fun, and using a gradient yarn, or a combination of two yarns, makes a beautiful, wearable cowl.

But the tricksy part is in the cast-on. If you’ve been frustrated by the “popular” version of the mobius cast-on, try Tess’s simplified method instead! Knit two rows, perform three simple steps (shown with photos), and you’re off and knitting!

Your cowl can be knit in any one or two light-to-average weight yarns, and various sizes. The ones shown are:
• blue (left): 30” x 4”
• green (center): 26” x 5”
• purple (right): 36” x 6”

The pattern is infinitely adaptable: the gold cowl was knit using the directions for the largest size, using a worsted-weight gradient yarn and another medium weight yarn, to a slightly larger gauge of 10 sts = 4”, and measures 44” circumference x 9” wide after blocking.

Materials:
Yarn: Light-to-average weight yarn, 200 yards of a single yarn or 100 yards each of two yarns contrasting in color, gauge and/or texture.

Needles: Circular needles, 40” – 50” long, size 10.5 US (6.5 mm) or size to get gauge.

Extras:
Ravel cord: this can be any strong, slippery string (nylon or rayon work best), heavy thread, or crochet cotton that can be pulled smoothly through the knitting.
Scrap yarn; tapestry needle; stitch marker.
