Jen Johnson created a matching hat pattern based on this cowl pattern, that pattern is available here: Un-Purled Cables Hat.

The basic pattern creates a cowl that is narrower in the middle and will be more snug, but the top and bottom may curl in the process. If you’d like a less-curly option, add 12 stitches evenly across row 4, which adds an extra cable repeat through the main body. When you get to the final row 10, make sure to decrease evenly across that row, back to the original 72 stitches for the final garter border. The added cable repeat helps a lot with the curling issue!
