Wednesday Socks
No longer available
Wednesday is a tribute to Gomez and Morticia’s delightfully sinister daughter in the Addams Family movies, television shows, and comics. Worked in the Poe-inspired “Lenore” colorway of Socks That Rock Mediumweight, and featuring mirrored yet asymmetrically-placed twisted-stitch cables evoking braids and lacing, these are the perfect socks to keep your feet warm on Halloween - or during those cozy family games of “Is There A God?” and “Wake the Dead.” The ground in graveyards can get chilly in October; best to come properly attired, don’t you think?
The Wednesday socks feature cuff-down construction, with a gusset heel and a flat toe. The twisted-stitch ribbing around the cuff transitions organically into the mirrored braid and ribbon cables. The ribbon cables, in turn, meld seamlessly into the slipped-stitch heel flap, while one of the braid cables extends unbroken down the side of the heel. Wednesday has a 60-stitch cast-on, and is worked in a heavier-than-standard sock yarn; loose knitters may find that they are able to get gauge in a lighter weight, and this pattern may be ideal for people who have trouble getting gauge on extremely fine sock patterns. Those who knit more firmly are recommended to stick with a heavier yarn, such as the suggested STR Mediumweight.
This pattern DOES require the ability to read a cable chart; the four cables are represented by two pairs of charts, all of which are used on every round, and two of which involve cabling on every round (no rest-round). However, in an effort to make the pattern as user-friendly as possible, I’ve added a “cheat sheet” at the top of the charts page, for easy reference to chart order while knitting. Wednesday will probably require some concentration, especially at the beginning, but once the sock is underway you may find the stitch patterns surprisingly easy to predict.
This pattern is available individually and as part of the Accessories Collection.
