Wuppertal Hat
Perfect Stashbuster! Less than 50g of DK yarn required.
Four hours knitting time! You’l be wearing your hat in no time.
Wuppertal is the ideal hat for a gift, or for yourself, and with the three different sizes on offer, can fit in a variety of different ways. Knit all three!
Turned-up cuff? No turn-up? No problem. Just choose the size that suits your style.
Having promised my boyfriend a new hat after he left his on the tube, I found myself touring around Europe, doing concerts of musical theatre songs, and spending enormous amounts of time on the tour bus, with a skein of DK in my project bag.
One day, we boarded the bus, bound for Wuppertal, home to the world’s first monorail system, die Schwebebahn. Built in 1901, and still in action today, it zooms along, following the course of the river through the city, hanging from its track, like something out of a science fiction movie.
The design for the hat, and the knitting of the prototype, were entirely done during that one journey, and the hat was finished during our stay in Wuppertal that evening, hence the name.
The pattern below works for three sizes of hat. I have knitted the sizes L and S, and they both fit me, albeit in different manners. The large is generous and roomy, with enough of a cuff for a turn up, or it can be worn down, covering the ears. The small is much more snug, and, because the stitches are pulled more tightly around the head, shrinks in height, so becomes much more of a skullcap, with no turn up. This of course, is on a man’s head. I imagine the small would fit a lady in very much the same way as the large fits me.
