Neringa
This design was inspired by the ebb and flow of tides and the constantly shifting meandering lines where the shore and the ocean meet. The colors of the water and the sand intermingle as they gradually trade places and overtake each other. Neringa, meaning ‘seacoast’, is all about this interplay of two contrasting colors combined with interesting textures reminiscent of the frothy ocean waves.
The pattern includes two shapes to choose from: my classic crescent shawl, worked from the top down and shaped with easy garter stitch short rows; and a rectangular stole, which is worked sideways to avoid tricky center joins.
The pattern stitches are easy enough even for a novice lace knitter; the pattern includes only a few basic lace stitches combined with simple garter and stockinette stitch textures.
The pattern is written for fingering weight yarn, but both shawls can be worked in lace weight as well as sport weight and DK yarns. Please note that heavier yarns may require extra yardage and larger needles, while lace weight may require smaller needles to maintain the textures.
Solid and tonal yarns will work with this project beautifully as long as there is enough contrast between the two yarns so that the color changes are clear. Gradient or ombre yarns could work for this project as long as they are combined with a solid color that contrasts with all the colors of the gradient.
Designed for the 10th anniversary of the Hill Country Yarn Crawl.
As requested by knitters in my group, I added a beaded option to the charts and information about this has been added to the specifications.
Crescent: approx 700 seed beads 6/0 4.00 mm
Stole: approx 525 seed beads 6/0 4.00 mm
Also included are the directions for an optional Infinity Cowl - these are listed with the directions for Stole because they use the same charts. Please note that the finished size and yardage requirements for the Cowl are rough estimates based on the Stole numbers.
Finished Measurements:
Crescent: 25” / 63.50 cm (center depth) x 67” / 170 cm (wingspan)
Stole: 20” / 51 cm (wide) x 79” / 200 cm (long)
Note: Measurements taken after blocking.
Yarn:
Crescent: two contrasting colors of fingering weight yarn, approx 700 - 750 yards total; the Crescent sample was completed with Madelinetosh Tosh Sock (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 395 yards / 361 m / 110 grams); color: Pelican (MC / 305 yards) & Maple Leaf (CC / 370 yards)
Stole: two contrasting colors of fingering weight yarn, approx 600 - 650 yards total; the Stole sample was completed with Madelinetosh Tosh Sock (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 395 yards / 361 m / 110 grams); color: Pelican (MC / 285 yards) & Coquette Deux (CC / 295 yards)
Gauge:
Crescent: 22 sts / 32 rows = 4” / 10 cm in garter stitch, unblocked, using US 7 / 4.50 mm needles
Stole: 20 sts / 30 rows = 4” / 10 cm in garter stitch, unblocked, using US 8 / 5.00 mm needles
Note: Correct gauge is not critical for this project, but your final measurements and yardage requirements may vary if your gauge is different.

US 7 / 4.50 mm circular needle, 32” or longer

There will be group chat threads dedicated to each clue as well as separate threads for posting photos of your work in progress (Susanna IC Ravelry group). The MKAL will conclude with a complete pattern pdf for your library and a random drawing of three winners from the finished projects posted in the FO Gallery.
This Yarn Crawl Mystery KAL is my tenth Mystery KAL shawl (previous MKALs include Mina, Jadis, Iridea, Fialka, and Diantha).
