As a person who’s lived in many places both globally and in the U.S., I’ve learned much about the beauty and diversity around us. Like a turtle, I found that home was where-ever I lived. So I wanted to celebrate my global and local friendships beginning with a collection of socks for these United States. My vision has taken well over 5 years to come to fruition, and frankly, has consumed a large part of my life over the last 10 months.
I never had the hubris to imagine I could do a sock for each US state by myself alone - and I never dreamed of dictating designs to anyone else. My memories of CO (or WA, KS, NY, AL, SC, TX, etc) are surely not identical to yours - unless we’re secret clones, LOL.
Each designer (some relative novices, others well - established), was invited to participate based upon their known expertise, skill, & accuracy in pattern presentation, as well as upon their talent, imagination, and unique viewpoint. These two critical points - talent and accuracy - are the fundamentals for a good pattern, and thus ultimately a good collection of designs.
I asked each designer to bring a personal viewpoint as part of their inspiration; with a specific request to avoid the trite or ‘typical’ - no apples for New York. Hmmm…. would gladly venture that 100 people would each say something different about a state if asked ‘what does it mean to you?’
Now, after time & effort longer than it takes to have a baby - we have a special collection to share. This collection’s heart is our connections as knitters - even if we’ve never met and all we know is each others email addy.
