Here are the notes on how I knit a gradient version. Please keep in mind that this sweater was knit in a size large. Your mileage may vary if you knit with a different yarn or size pattern.
I used three colors varying from dark to light. In this write up I will designate them as “D” - Dark, “M” - Medium, and “L” - Light. I used Greenwood Fiberworks Tonal Yakity Yak in Garnet, Currant, and Melon. I needed two skeins of the darkest color and only one skein each of the medium and light colors.
I began by knitting the body so that I could later align the color on the sleeves.
I knit with the darkest color “D” until the sweater was 5 1/2 inches measuring from the side seam. Continuing in pattern, I began the color changes by knitting the following rows and carrying the color not in use up the side seam and catching in the loose color as I came around each row.
Knit Body
1 row M
13 rows D
2 rows M
8 rows D
3 rows M
5 rows D
5 rows M
3 rows D
8 rows M
2 rows D
13 rows M
1 row D
and then 10 rows M. I stopped at this point in the color progression to make the sleeves. We will pick up the color progression after we attach the sleeves.
Knit Sleeves, both the same
Knit 3 inches D
then
1 row M
13 rows D
2 rows M
8 rows D
3 rows M
5 rows D
5 rows M
3 rows D
8 rows M
2 rows D
13 rows M
1 row D
10 rows M
At this point you attach the sleeves and continue the color progression as follows
3 rows M
1 row L
8 rows M
2 rows L
5 rows M
3 rows L
3 rows M
5 rows L
2 rows M
8 rows L
1 row M
Now, continue in only L until you finish the sweater.
I wanted a little higher neckline, so I continued up another 1 1/2 inches of the established pattern before binding off.
