I saw Solveig’s Flowers in the Snow pattern on-line somewhere about 4 years ago, just as I was getting into crochet and decided to make a few squares with the wool I had available. I had bought a couple of balls of a gorgeous variegated blue wool in a discount store, so decided to make plain blue circles, rather than use 3 colours per circle like Solveig. I used bog standard white Robin DK to make them into squares and blue Robin to join them.
(As you can probably tell if you’ve seen her pattern, I haven’t followed it exactly but she was the inspiration.)
I decided I’d quite like to make a bed sized blanket, so trotted off to buy more blue wool. Hah! No such luck. The discount store didn’t have any left as it was a discontinued yarn they got cheap… I forget what brand it was. I know it was Spanish and I spent ages trying to find it on-line but couldn’t find anyone with that colour. But that may have been a good thing, as it was 4 ply and would have taken forever to make a large blanket!
So I made as many as I could and made what is effectively a cot sized blanket, although I use it at the foot of the bed to keep my feet warm! And why is it called an Olympic Foot Blanket?? Simply because I made a lot of the squares while watching the London Olympics on the telly!
It’s 9 squares by 13 and they are joined together with double crochet, which gives a lovely raised texture. Currently it just has a very simple border but I bought some more of the Robin wool (good old Robin, always available!) and may add more rows to it one day.
