Pattern in book is incomplete. In addition to reversing the thumb opening for the right mitt, you must also reverse the gusset shaping.

Shaping Right Thumb Gusset:
• Round 1: Knit to last 5 sts, k2tog, ssk, k1
• Round 2: knit
• Round 3: knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, ssk
• Round 4: knit
• Round 5: knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, slip next st, remove marker, slip next st (first stitch from next round) and knit those two sts tog,
• Rounds 6-8 knit
